FUKUOKA, JAPAN – A comprehensive Social Return on Investment (SROI) study of NPO Mama Work Institute’s innovative career reentry program reveals extraordinary impact, generating ¥31.76 million in social value from an initial ¥1.3 million investment in its first year of operation.

The pilot program, implemented in Fukuoka City in 2015, provides intensive training for mothers to become strategic administrative personnel in growing startups. The eight-day curriculum covers essential business skills including human resources, recruitment, corporate law, and accounting, combined with professional mindset development.

Key Findings:

– First-year SROI ratio of 24.4:1

– Four-year cumulative SROI ratio of 107.0:1

– 70% reduction in administrative workload for participating startups

– Improved family dynamics and work-life balance for participants

– Increased economic activity through consumer spending and childcare service utilization

“This program demonstrates that investing in mothers’ career development creates substantial value for individuals, businesses, and the broader economy,” said Aya Tanaka, Founder and Executive Director of NPO Mama Work Institute. “The success of our pilot program makes a compelling case for regional expansion.”

Regional Scale-up Analysis:

A detailed feasibility study for expanding the program across the Kyushu region projects:

– Potential to reach 3,586 qualified candidates through 119 training sessions

– 3,213 startups could benefit from hiring program graduates

– Projected four-year SROI of 313.3:1

– Potential to generate ¥41.68 billion in social value over four years

The findings suggest that this innovative approach effectively addresses multiple challenges in the Japanese economy: labor shortage, women’s workforce participation, and startup growth, while advancing gender equality in the workplace.
